Magnolia Inspiration
Inspiration opens on bare wood in late winter and early spring, well before any leaf appears, and the flowers run to deep rose and purple-red rather than the pale pink of the common saucer magnolias. The habit is upright and comparatively narrow, which is why it gets specified where Magnolia soulangeana would sprawl too wide.
Because it is deciduous, treat it as a seasonal screen rather than a year round one. In leaf it is well clothed with large foliage. Through winter it is a bare framework carrying fat furry buds.
Two things spoil the display. A late frost while the buds are opening browns the petals, and wind will shred them inside a day, so choose a sheltered position with morning sun. Keep the roots cool and mulched, never let the plant bake dry, and avoid digging around the base, because it resents root disturbance. Growth is slow to moderate.
