Magnolia NCMX1 Mercury
Sold under a breeding code as well as a name, Mercury is one of those magnolias where the tag matters: check the label that arrives with the plant, since coded lines like NCMX1 are propagated under licence and the trade name can differ between growers. What is not in doubt is the grade. At 45L, 400mm and 420mm advanced standard, these are trees already carrying a formed head rather than whips.
Magnolias reward good siting more than they reward good pruning. Pick a position with morning sun and shelter from the prevailing wind, because wind shreds large flowers and dries out the shallow root plate. Soil should be deep, humus-rich and free draining, on the slightly acid side. They dislike lime rubble and dislike compaction more.
That root system sits close to the surface and is easily damaged, so mulch generously, never dig or rotary hoe under the canopy, and keep turf back from the trunk. Delivery is a flat $99 to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA.
