Magnolia Vulcan
Anyone shopping the older soulangeana magnolias runs into the same ceiling on colour, a pinkish mauve. This was the first deciduous magnolia to get past it to a genuinely deep red-purple, out of the Jury breeding work in New Zealand. The flowers are large and carried on bare wood before the leaves break. Colour is strongest in cooler districts and on established trees, while a warm spring pushes the tone lighter.
Size stays manageable. This is a small tree with an upright frame, suited to a courtyard, a lawn feature or a spot where you want a few weeks of theatre and then a clean leafy shape for the rest of the season.
Two things it will not forgive. The first is wind at flowering time, which browns and tears the petals within a day, so choose a sheltered aspect. The second is a dry, compacted root run. Magnolias root close to the surface and want cool, humus-rich, well drained soil with mulch over the top and no digging around the base. Prune only to remove damage, and do it after flowering.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 12 sizes, from 200mm up to Bare Root Regular, priced from $49.95 to $2269.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
