Crabapple - Malus Tom Matthews
Crabapples earn their place twice over: once in spring when the bare framework covers itself in blossom, and again in autumn when the small hard fruit colours up and hangs on well after the leaves have gone. Tom Matthews is one of the less common ornamental Malus selections, and like the rest of the group it is a modest, deciduous tree that suits a front lawn, a driveway edge or a row along a fence line without ever becoming a problem.
Full sun is not negotiable, and neither is winter chill. These are cool climate trees at heart, so they perform in Victoria, the southern tablelands, the Adelaide Hills and the highlands rather than in warm coastal Queensland, where flowering is thin and disease pressure is high.
The fruit is edible but sharp, better cooked into jelly than eaten off the tree. Crabapples also make useful pollinisers for nearby apple trees. Watch for scab and codling moth in wet seasons, and prune in winter to keep the centre open.
