Box Elder - Acer negundo Flamingo Pink Flamingo
Pink and cream splashed through green, on leaves that are not maple-shaped at all. Box elder carries compound leaves of three to five leaflets, so 'Flamingo' is regularly mistaken for a variegated ash. The strongest pink flush sits on new growth and fades as the wood hardens, and that single fact is the key to managing the tree.
Because the colour lives in young wood, this variety is normally cut back hard in late winter, either coppiced low or pollarded to a short framework, to force a fresh crop of brightly marked shoots and hold the size down. Left to run it becomes a much larger, plainer tree.
Two things need policing. Any shoot that reverts to plain green grows faster than the variegated wood and must be cut out at its origin, and grafted plants throw rootstock suckers that need the same treatment. Variegated foliage scorches in hot dry wind, so part shade suits inland gardens, with steady summer water. Box elder can naturalise along waterways, so keep it out of creek-side planting.
