Norway Maple - Acer platanoides Crimson King
Buyers regularly ask for Crimson King when the photo they have actually seen is Crimson Sentry. Sentry is the narrower, more compact sport; King is the full sized, broad crowned tree, and at maturity it casts a very large and very dark shadow. Order on that basis rather than on the size of the pot in front of you.
The foliage is the reason anyone plants it: deep maroon to near black from the spring flush right through summer, holding colour far better than most purple leafed trees, which fade to a muddy green by January. Autumn is honestly its weakest season, with leaves turning a dull bronze maroon rather than lighting up. In spring, clusters of maroon and yellow flowers open on bare wood ahead of the leaves.
Give it cool temperate conditions and room to spread. Under a mature tree the shade is heavy enough to thin out lawn, and the winged seeds germinate freely in garden beds, so stay on top of seedlings.
