Norway Maple - Acer platanoides Crimson Sentry
Deep purple foliage on a tight, upright frame is the whole point of Crimson Sentry. It arose as a sport of Crimson King and is distinctly smaller and denser than its parent, with smaller leaves and a narrow oval crown that suits a courtyard or a driveway line where a full sized Norway maple would swamp the space.
The colour holds through summer rather than fading to a muddy bronze by January. Autumn is a quieter affair, more russet and bronze than the scarlet a pistachio or an ornamental pear gives you, so plant it for the long purple season and treat the autumn turn as a bonus.
Climate decides whether this tree is worth attempting at all. Norway maples want a genuine cold winter and dislike humid subtropical summers, so they perform in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and the tablelands and struggle on the warm coastal strip. Dark leaves also scorch in hot dry wind, so give it some afternoon shelter on inland sites and keep the water up over its first few summers.
