Red Maple - Acer rubrum Scanlon
Plan for the shape before you plant. Scanlon is a red maple selected for an upright oval to broadly columnar crown, narrow while young and filling out with age, which is why it turns up as a street, driveway and avenue tree where a spreading maple simply would not fit. It holds a strong central leader and a reasonably tidy branch structure.
Autumn is the point of it. The three to five lobed leaves turn orange through to red as nights cool, and colour is noticeably better in cool temperate districts than in warm coastal ones. Spring brings small red flower clusters on bare wood ahead of the leaves.
Acer rubrum has two habits worth knowing about. It wants moisture and will not tolerate long dry spells on a hot exposed nature strip without irrigation, and it yellows between the leaf veins on alkaline or limey soils, so test your pH before committing to a whole row. Available as 50L advanced stock.
