Shantung Maple - Acer truncatum x. Urban Sunset®
Same parentage as Ruby Sunset, different silhouette. Where Ruby Sunset builds a broad oval crown, Urban Sunset stays narrower and more upright, which is the whole reason it was selected. If you are lining a footpath, a median strip or a driveway with a fence close on one side, that narrower profile means fewer pruning cuts over the tree's life.
Foliage is the small, glossy, dark green leaf that comes from the Shantung side of the cross, carried on a strong central leader with well spaced branch attachments. Autumn runs orange through to red, and the leaves tend to hang on a little longer than a straight Norway maple before they drop.
Heat and dry tolerance is better than most maples once the tree is established, but the first two summers still decide the outcome. Deep, infrequent watering beats a light daily sprinkle every time. Advanced stock ships flat rate $99 to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA.
