White Cedar - Melia azedarach
By midwinter the leaves are long gone and the bare grey branches are hung with clusters of hard yellow berries. The rest of the calendar is just as full: ferny bipinnate leaves open in spring, followed by loose sprays of small lilac flowers with a honey scent, then deep summer shade and a yellow canopy in autumn.
Those berries are the catch. They are toxic to dogs and to people, they drop over a long period, and they roll and stain on hard surfaces. Keep the tree well clear of pool surrounds, driveways, play areas and anywhere a dog spends its day.
Set that aside and it is a tough deciduous shade tree. It handles heat, dry spells, poor soil and coastal wind, which is why it has been planted so widely through hot inland towns. It also suckers from damaged roots and seeds itself readily, so it is not a plant to put next to a bush block. The other recurring problem is white cedar moth: the caterpillars can strip a tree in a few weeks and gather on the trunk at night, which is when they are easiest to deal with.

This plant is available in 5 sizes, from 200mm up to 75L, priced from $36.95 to $449.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
