Tupelo - Nyssa sylvatica Red Red Wine
Will it colour up in a warm-temperate garden? Nyssa sylvatica is one of the more reliable autumn performers outside genuinely cold districts, and Red Red Wine was selected for deep wine to scarlet tones held over a long period rather than a quick flare and drop.
The habit is upright and pyramidal while young, with glossy dark leaves through summer that look almost lacquered. It is deciduous, so plan for bare branches in winter; the branching is fine and horizontal, which reads well against a fence or a rendered wall.
The catch with tupelo is establishment. It resents root disturbance, sulks in compacted clay fill, and wants consistent moisture and a slightly acid soil to look its best. Get it in early in the season, water deeply through the first two summers, and keep mowers away from the trunk. Slow to start, then long lived and largely trouble free.
