Olive - Olea Correggiolo
Correggiolo is a Tuscan oil cultivar, grown in central Italy for fruit that is small, ripens to purple-black and presses to a peppery, green-tasting oil. Yields are modest next to table cultivars and the fruit is not really worth brining, so treat it as an oil tree or, just as often in Australian gardens, as a grey-leaved evergreen in its own right.
Foliage is narrow and grey-green with a silvered underside that flickers in wind. The habit is upright while young, spreading and gnarled with age. Full sun is essential, and once the roots are down it needs very little water. Growth is slow to moderate, which suits clipped shapes, pots and formal avenues.
- Plant well clear of paving and pool surrounds, since dropped fruit stains badly.
- Olive lace bug causes mottled, bleached leaves in humid districts; check leaf undersides in spring.
- Fruit set improves with a second olive cultivar nearby.
