Orange Jessamine - Murraya koenigii Curry Tree
Two quite different plants get sold under the Murraya name and this listing runs them together. Orange jessamine is Murraya paniculata, the glossy leaved hedging shrub with scented white flowers. Murraya koenigii is the curry tree, and that is what you are buying here: a slender, suckering small tree grown for its leaves rather than for hedging.
The foliage is pinnate, made up of many small pointed leaflets, and it carries the warm resinous aroma used through South Indian cooking. Leaves are stripped from the stalk and dropped into hot oil at the start of a dish; dried leaves lose most of what makes the plant worth growing. Small white flower clusters are followed by black berries, which are best removed since the seed is not eaten.
It likes warmth and hates cold wet feet. In frost prone inland gardens keep it in a pot that can be shifted under cover, and expect it to sulk and thin through a cold winter before flushing again in spring. It suckers freely from the roots, so give it a bed of its own or be ready to cut them out.
