Quince - Smyrna Cydonia oblonga Smyrna
Two things make Smyrna worth the space in a home orchard. The fruit is very large and pale gold, and the flesh is among the more tender of the quinces once cooked, so it breaks down into paste and poached dishes without endless simmering. Raw, like any quince, it is hard, sour and astringent. The perfume is the giveaway; a bowl of ripe fruit will scent a room.
The tree itself is small, crooked and deciduous, with grey-felted new growth and single pale pink blossom in spring. It is self-fertile, so one tree will set a crop. Give it an open, sunny position and soil that holds moisture, because a dry summer gives you small, gnarled fruit.
Watch for leaf blight in humid seasons, which spots the leaves and strips them early, and for codling moth moving across from nearby apples and pears. Rake up fallen leaves and dropped fruit rather than leaving them sitting under the tree.
