Tree of a Thousand Stars - Serissa foetida Snow Leaves (Serissa japonica)
Serissa is a bonsai plant that occasionally escapes into pots and small sheltered beds. Snow Leaves is the variegated selection, with tiny oval leaves edged in creamy white on a dense twiggy framework, and small white tubular flowers appearing in flushes through the warmer months rather than all at once. The trunk takes on a pale, corky, aged look surprisingly young, which is most of the reason bonsai growers reach for it.
It is not a forgiving plant. Serissa objects to being moved, to cold draughts, to drying out and to sudden changes in light, and it registers every objection by dropping most of its leaves at once. It usually reflushes if the roots are sound, so resist the urge to drown a bare plant in water. Keep the mix evenly moist but never sodden, give it good light with shelter from harsh afternoon sun, and feed lightly and often through the growing season.
The species name refers to the smell of the cut roots and bark, which is worth knowing before you repot.
