Chinese Tallow - Triadica sebifera
Before anything else, check your local weed list. Chinese tallow seeds heavily, birds carry it well beyond the garden, and it is regarded as an environmental weed in parts of coastal Queensland and New South Wales, with restrictions applying in some council areas.
Where it is permitted, it is a genuinely good small to medium deciduous shade tree. The leaves are broad and almost diamond shaped on long thin stalks, so the canopy trembles in the lightest breeze, and autumn colour is why most people plant it: reds, oranges and deep purples, and unusually reliable in mild coastal gardens where maples and pistachios simply go brown. Bare winter branches let sun onto the house, then leaf up quickly in spring. It is fast, copes with wet ground and short dry spells, and casts light rather than heavy shade. The milky sap can irritate skin, seedlings appear readily in beds and lawn, and the roots run shallow, so keep it well clear of paving and tight courtyards.

The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
