Seychelles Stilt Palm - Verschaffeltia splendida
Few palms carry the drama of the Seychelles stilt palm. Juveniles hold huge undivided glossy blades that read almost like elephant ears, splitting into ragged segments only as the crown lifts. The trunk stands on a cone of exposed stilt roots and is armed with black spines when young, which is a genuine handling consideration for an advanced 60 litre specimen going into a courtyard.
This is a wet tropical rainforest palm. It wants heat, high humidity, constant soil moisture and shelter, and it has no frost tolerance at all. In practice that limits open-ground planting to far north Queensland and the warmest, most protected pockets of the subtropics. Further south it is an atrium or heated glasshouse plant.
The usual way it disappoints is wind. Those undivided leaves shred along the veins in an exposed position and the plant survives, but the look you bought it for goes with them. Site it in filtered light, out of the prevailing breeze, and keep water up through the first two summers.
