Sweet Viburnum - Viburnum Emerald Lustre
When a client wants a boundary hidden by next summer, this is usually the answer. Emerald Lustre is a selection of Viburnum odoratissimum with large, glossy, leathery leaves and new growth that flushes bronze to copper before hardening to deep green, and it puts on height quickly enough to close a gap in a season or two given water and feed.
It is not the same plant as Viburnum tinus, which has small leaves and flowers heavily. This one is grown for foliage and screen density, and flowering is incidental. Full sun through to part shade both work, and it takes clipping well, which is how most people hold it as a flat green wall rather than the big shrub it wants to become.
The catch is that it is thirsty by hedging standards. Moderate, consistent watering, particularly against a hot brick wall or in a competing root zone, is what separates a solid hedge from one with thin, yellowing lower growth. Space plants so each has room to fill out instead of jamming them in for speed.
