Water Gum - Tristaniopsis laurina Sprite Intended (Tristania laurina)
Why plant Sprite rather than a seedling water gum? Because seedling Tristaniopsis laurina varies a good deal in size and habit, while this selection was chosen to stay smaller and denser. That makes it usable in a narrow verge, a courtyard or under powerlines, where the straight species eventually needs butchering.
Everything good about the species is still here. Glossy dark evergreen leaves with bronze to reddish new growth, clusters of small yellow flowers through summer, and smooth bark that sheds in patches to leave tan and orange beneath. It came off creek banks, so it copes with ground that stays damp, while still handling hard paved urban sites once established.
Expect it to sit and think for its first season before it moves. Scale insects and the sooty mould that follows them are the usual complaint in humid gardens, always worse on stressed or dry trees, so water it properly through the first couple of summers and the problem largely looks after itself.
