White Chinese Wisteria - Wisteria sinensis Alba
Build the structure before you plant this. White Chinese wisteria matures into a heavy woody rope that will bend lattice, lift roof tiles and crush a downpipe, so give it welded pipe, steel or solid hardwood and nothing lighter.
The flowering habit is why people persist. Racemes of white pea flowers hang on bare grey stems in spring, scented, ahead of the leaves, then the vine leafs up for dense summer shade over a pergola and drops the lot for winter sun underneath. Chinese wisteria twines anticlockwise and flowers before the foliage; the Japanese species twines the other way and opens longer racemes with the leaves, which is the quickest way to tell what you actually have.
Prune twice a year. Shorten the long summer whips back to a few buds in late summer, then tidy those spurs while the plant is bare. Any runner left lying on soil will layer and sucker, so keep it off garden beds and away from neighbouring fencelines.

This plant is available in 4 sizes, from 180mm up to 400mm, priced from $37.95 to $269.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
