Chinese Wisteria - Wisteria sinensis
If your pergola is not steel or hardwood, reconsider before planting Chinese wisteria against it. Mature stems thicken into ropes with real leverage behind them, and over time they lift gutters, crush lattice and split a timber post. Build for it properly, or grow it as a standard on its own stake and keep it off the house.
Done well, there is little to touch it. The flowers hang in long scented racemes on bare wood in spring, opening more or less all at once along the raceme, which is one way growers separate it from the Japanese species that opens gradually from the base. Chinese wisteria also twines anticlockwise.
Two practical points. Buy grafted or cutting grown stock, because seedlings can take many years to flower and some never perform. And prune twice a year: shorten the whippy summer growth back to a few buds, then tidy those same spurs in winter. Skip that and you get a great deal of leaf and very little flower.

The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
