Westringia

Westringia, the coastal rosemary, is the native that made formal hedging possible in Australian conditions: soft grey-green foliage that clips like box, dainty white-to-mauve flowers most of the year, and a constitution built on sea cliffs. This page lists every westringia available from our partner farms.

The named cultivars cover every scale of the job. For tight low hedges and balls, Grey Box is the standout, holding a naturally compact shape that barely needs the shears, with Low Horizon flatter again for banks and borders. Mid-height hedging belongs to Blue Gem, the heaviest-flowering of the group, alongside Jervis Gem, Zena and Naringa. The classic species Westringia fruticosa and the old faithful Wynyabbie Gem still carry the bigger informal screens, while Mundi spreads as a dense groundcover and Bulli Coastal Creep hugs the ground on dunes and walls.

Growing notes: westringias want sun and drainage and tolerate everything else, salt spray, wind, drought, light frost and poor sandy soil. They take clipping better than any other native shrub; trim lightly every couple of months through the growing season and a hedge stays furniture-crisp, or leave them natural for a soft grey cloud with year-round flowers. Feed once a year with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser. The one enemy is waterlogged clay, so mound the bed if drainage is doubtful.

Use westringia as the native answer wherever the hedging page calls for box, alongside Australian natives and the low-maintenance palette. Every order ships farm-direct with flat $99 delivery across QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA, a $399 minimum order, and the 30-Day Healthy Plant Guarantee.
