Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum
Strip the leaves off in winter and a Japanese maple is still doing something. The branching is fine, layered and horizontal, built up in tiers, and a well grown specimen has as much presence bare as it does in full leaf. That is why these end up in courtyards, entry gardens and beside water features where they are looked at from close range all year.
These are seedling grown palmatum rather than a named clone, so expect variation between individual plants in leaf shape, habit and the exact autumn tone, which runs through yellow, orange and red. Choose on the form of the trunk and the branch structure and you will be happy with the plant.
Site it out of hot dry wind and away from a reflective western wall, because the leaf margins brown off quickly under stress. Filtered light beneath a high open canopy suits it. Keep it mulched, water through summer, and do not cultivate the soil over the shallow roots.

This plant is available in 20 sizes, from 200mm up to Bare Root Regular, priced from $36.95 to $4759.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
