Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum dissectum Viridis
A mound of finely cut green leaves on branches that arch out and down, usually grafted at about waist height so the canopy cascades from a short standard. Viridis is the green form of the lace leaf maples, and it stays wider than it is tall, which makes it a courtyard, entry or large pot subject rather than a shade tree.
Foliage runs light green through spring and summer, then moves through gold and orange before dropping. The bare winter frame is part of the appeal, so put it where the branching is worth looking at.
Hot dry wind is what ruins these maples. Leaf edges crisp and brown by late summer in an exposed position, particularly inland. Give it shelter and afternoon shade in warmer districts, keep the root zone mulched and never let it dry out through the hot months. Bare root stock is available in the dormant season alongside the potted and bagged grades, and both establish well if you get them in before bud movement.
