Foxtail Agave - Agave attenuata
Half the coastal courtyards and beach house frontages built in this country over the past twenty years have one of these in them, and the reason is simple: it is the agave you can plant beside a path without drawing blood. Attenuata has no terminal spine and no teeth along the leaf margin, so unlike most of the genus it is safe next to seating, pool fences and driveways.
Rosettes are soft grey green and wide, and with age each one lifts itself onto a short curved trunk and starts offsetting at the base, which is how a single plant becomes a colony. The flower spike, when it eventually comes, arches over like an animal's tail and gives the plant its common name. That rosette dies afterwards, but the pups carry on.
Watch for two things: snails scarring the new leaves, and agave snout weevil, which hollows out the crown and drops a healthy looking plant flat almost overnight. It is also frost tender.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 8 sizes, from 140mm up to 500mm, priced from $22.95 to $399.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
