Succulents

Succulents ask for less water and less attention than most of what we grow. They suit hot dry beds, gravel rockeries, pots on a paved courtyard, exposed coastal gardens, and green roof or verge plantings on shallow soil. If a strip keeps drying out, or you want a container that survives a fortnight without attention, start here. There are 70mm and 130mm starters for mass planting, a broad middle in 140mm to 200mm pots, and 400mm, 500mm and 100L sizes for an established plant on day one.

The collection splits into two jobs. The architectural plants hold a shape year round and read from a distance. Foxtail Agave - Agave attenuata makes a soft grey-green rosette with no spines along the leaf edge, which makes it usable beside a path; it runs from 140mm up to 50L. Queen Victoria Agave - Agave victoria reginae is slower and tighter, a compact dome of white-edged leaves for a pot or a rockery pocket, though the leaf tips are sharp, so keep it back from doorways. Tree Aloe - Aloe barberae reaches genuine tree size and is bought as a single specimen, not in groups. The second job is filling and detail. Echeveria Blue Metal and Aeonium Short Black are collectible rosettes for pots, bowls and bed edges, while Elephant Bush - Portulacaria afra is shrubby, clips well and holds up as a low informal hedge. The agaves and Portulacaria handle salt wind; Echeveria and Aeonium do better with a wall or a hedge between them and it.

Drainage decides the outcome. Plant into gritty free-draining soil, mound or raise the bed if the ground is heavy clay, and use a cactus and succulent mix rather than a moisture-holding potting mix in pots. Water deeply, but only once the mix has dried through. Full sun suits the agaves and aloes, while Echeveria and Aeonium hold better colour with morning sun and afternoon shade. Aeonium runs on the opposite clock, growing through the cool months and resting in summer heat, so water it in winter and ease off in January. Frost is where the assumptions go wrong. Agave attenuata is frost tender and marks at a light frost, and Aeonium, Echeveria, Portulacaria and young Aloe barberae are all damaged well before the tougher agaves are, so in frost-prone districts keep them under eaves, against a warm wall, or in pots you can shift.

Rich, moisture-retentive soil combined with regular watering does more damage here than cold does. Compost-heavy beds, mulch piled against the stem and an irrigation line running all summer rot the crown and lower leaves within a season, and in humid summer rainfall districts on the Queensland and northern New South Wales coast the wet season alone can do it. Site them where water leaves fast, keep mulch coarse and pulled back from the base, and leave the irrigation off.
