Kalanchoe Bronze Sculpture
Thick, bronze toned leaves are the whole point of this one. It sits in the group of kalanchoes grown for foliage rather than flowers, where the leaf substance is heavy and slightly waxy or felted and the colour deepens with strong light and cool nights. Grown on in a 170mm pot, it works as a bright windowsill plant, on a covered patio, or planted out in a dry, gritty bed in frost free areas.
Water is where people go wrong. Let the mix dry right out between drinks, use a cactus and succulent blend rather than a peaty potting mix, and cut watering back hard through winter. Sitting wet and cold is what rots the stem base.
Two warnings worth knowing: the leaves snap and mark easily, so site it away from traffic, and kalanchoes are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Watch for mealybug tucked down into the leaf joints, where it is easy to miss until the plant stalls.
