Jelly Bean Plant - Sedum rubrotinctum Jelly Bean
In strong light the plump little leaves on this sedum flush from green to deep red at the tips, which is the entire reason it is grown. In shade they stay uniformly green and the stems stretch out searching for sun. The leaves are shaped much as the common name suggests, packed along short trailing stems that spill over the rim of a pot.
It is one of the easiest succulents to propagate, largely because it does the job itself. Leaves knock off at the slightest bump and root wherever they land, so expect volunteers in neighbouring pots. That same brittleness makes it a poor choice beside a path people brush past.
Water sparingly and let the mix dry between drinks, since soggy soil rots the stems at the base quickly. It suits shallow bowls, hanging pots, rockeries and dry gaps in paving. The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wash your hands after taking cuttings or tidying it up.
