Pig's Ear - Cotyledon orbiculata Delight
There is a fast way to spoil this plant, and it is handling the leaves. The chalky white bloom on the paddle-shaped foliage is a fine wax coating that rubs off under a thumbprint and does not grow back on that leaf, and overhead watering will wash it into patches. Water at the base, keep it away from paths where people brush past, and it stays clean.
Pig's ear is a South African succulent with thick, rounded, upright leaves usually edged in a fine red line, topped through the warmer months by tall stems of nodding orange-red tubular bells that birds visit. It reads well against dark gravel, in a shallow bowl, or repeated as a grey note through a dry garden bed.
Give it a gritty, sharply drained mix and plenty of light. Rot in humid summer wet is the main killer, so keep it out of irrigated beds. Worth knowing that Cotyledon foliage is toxic to stock and pets if eaten. Available in 140mm and 170mm.
