Drooping Sheoak - Allocasuarina verticillata
People take one look and call it a pine. It is not. Those drooping grey green needles are jointed branchlets, and the true leaves are only the tiny scales at each joint. Drooping sheoak reads as a fine textured, soft weeping small tree, and in wind it makes the sighing hiss the genus is known for.
Male and female plants are separate. Males rust over with pollen in season and briefly look bronze from a distance, while females carry the squat woody cones that glossy black cockatoos travel for. If the birds are the reason you are planting, plant a group rather than one tree.
It handles exposed coastal sites, shallow rocky ground, drought and infertile soil, and fixes nitrogen through root nodules, which makes it genuinely useful on tired dirt. The needle litter builds into a thick mat that suppresses grass under the canopy, handy as mulch and unhelpful if you wanted lawn there. Keep it out of rich, irrigated beds where it grows soft, tall and leans.

This plant is available in 9 sizes, from 70mm up to 45L, priced from $16.95 to $349.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
