Bottlebrush Callistemon Eureka (Melaleuca)

Eureka was selected as a screening plant rather than a display shrub, and the narrow upright frame is what came of it. It holds a dense frame of roughly two to three metres and pushes its growth vertically, which is exactly what lets a row close into a solid green wall instead of an open thicket. Deep red brushes come heavily in spring with a lighter repeat later. Boundary screens, driveway windbreaks and informal native hedges are the standard jobs.

Spacing a Eureka screen

The upright habit that makes it useful is also the thing people get wrong at planting. A spreading, arching bottlebrush will eventually throw a branch sideways and paper over a gap in a row. Eureka will not. It grows up rather than out, so a line set at two metres stays a line of separate columns with daylight between them for years, and no amount of trimming persuades it to fill sideways. Plant one to 1.2 metres apart if you want the row closed within two or three seasons, and treat 1.5 metres as the outside limit. Run a string line and keep the spacing even, because an uneven Eureka screen does not correct itself later.

Soil, sun and the first three years

It performs across coastal and inland gardens through the warm temperate and subtropical zones and takes a western Sydney or Brisbane summer without complaint. Full sun gives the denser habit; part shade is workable, though the frame opens up. Soil is rarely the limit. It accepts heavy clay, compacted builder fill and ground that stays wet for a few days after rain, conditions that quietly kill most exotic hedging shrubs. The years that decide the plant are the first three. Trim lightly every season from planting and it breaks low and stays furnished to the ankles. Leave it alone and everything runs to the leaders, the base goes bare, and you finish with woody legs under a green hat. Cutting into that bare wood seldom brings it back, so any recovery has to be staged over two or three seasons. You will also see it labelled Melaleuca in newer references, a change of botanical name and nothing else.

Sizing it against the rest

Kings Park Special is the one to take where the thing you are screening is two storeys, since it lifts into a small tree with arching limbs that Eureka will never match for height. Little John sits at the far end as a dwarf mound that will not screen anything at all. Endeavour is the closest comparison, and the split is simple: Endeavour holds a sheared face and reads as a clipped hedge, while Eureka is for a screen left to grow out with one trim a year. Larger stock for an established screen sits under privacy screening.

After flowering

Cut the moment the brushes brown off, taking the shears back into the spent heads before the new shoots run out past them. Sawfly larvae are the pest to watch on young plants, black grubs that huddle in a mass on the branch tips and can strip a small bush in days; a jet from the hose knocks them off and the plant recovers. Feed after the annual cut with a slow release native fertiliser, water it in, and keep water up through the first summer while the roots spread.
