Bottlebrush Callistemon Little John (Melaleuca)

At about a metre high and as much across, Little John stays a dense rounded mound where the rest of the genus builds a shrub or a small tree. The fine blue grey foliage is half the reason it gets specified: it holds that tone through winter and sits well against rendered walls, pale gravel and hard paving. Brushes are deep blood red, heaviest in spring with a lighter repeat later, and they sit low enough to bring honeyeaters down to eye level. Low clipped borders, front of house mass plantings and driveway runs where a taller shrub would block the sightline are where it belongs.

Drainage decides it

This is the one place Little John parts company with the rest of the genus. Most bottlebrushes shrug off heavy, wet ground and several of them prefer it. Little John does not. In unimproved clay or a bed that stays soggy it thins, browns off in patches and dies out plant by plant, usually the season after a wet summer, and a mass planting with three holes in it cannot be patched invisibly. Mound the bed, work in coarse gritty material and sort the drainage out before anything goes in the ground, because there is no correcting it afterwards. In a container the same rule bites harder: a free draining native mix, and never a saucer left standing with water in it.

Otherwise it is straightforward through temperate and subtropical gardens, and it takes light to moderate frost better than the weeping forms do. Full sun gives the tightest, greyest growth. For a low border, plant 600 to 750mm apart so the mounds meet without crowding; for a broader mass, a metre lets each plant keep its own outline. Once established, keep it on the lean side, since a plant pushed hard with water loses the compact shape you bought it for.

What it cannot do

It will never screen anything, which is worth saying plainly, because it is the bottlebrush most people already know by name and it gets bought for jobs it cannot take. For privacy along a boundary, Eureka is the upright form to look at. If you want something compact but the corner is damp, Captain Cook is the larger dwarf that tolerates wet ground where Little John will sulk. Choose Little John for grey foliage, tight habit and genuinely low height on ground that drains. It sits alongside the rest of our natives.

Keeping the mound tight

Light and often beats one hard cut a year. Tip prune after each flush, taking the spent brushes and little more, because a plant allowed to go woody turns gappy and will not fill back in from bare stems. Do not tidy it in late winter: that removes the wood carrying the spring brushes and leaves you with a neat green ball and nothing on it. Feed sparingly in early spring and keep the mulch thin right around the crown so the base stays dry.
