Crimson Bottlebrush - Callistemon citrinus (Melaleuca citrina)
Where Callistemon viminalis weeps, citrinus holds itself stiff and upright, and that one difference is why this species clips into a hedge and the weeping form never really does.
Crush a leaf and you get the lemon scent the name refers to. New growth breaks pink to bronze before hardening off to a dull green, and the crimson brushes carry through the main spring flush with scattered repeats later in the season. Honeyeaters and lorikeets find it within days of the first brushes opening, which is exactly what it is grown for.
It takes heavy clay and periods of wet feet better than most natives, then sits out dry spells once the roots are down, matching the low to moderate watering listed above. The one job it genuinely needs is a prune straight after flowering, cutting back behind the spent brushes before the woody seed capsules build up along the stems. Skip that for two or three seasons and you get a leggy shrub flowering only on the tips. Watch for sawfly larvae clustered on soft new shoots in warm weather.

The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
