Apple - Red Delicious Malus domestica
How cold does your winter really get? That is the first question to settle with Red Delicious, because this is a high chill apple that needs a genuinely cold dormancy to break bud evenly and crop. It performs in the cool districts, from the Adelaide Hills and the Victorian ranges to the New South Wales tablelands and the Granite Belt, and it disappoints in warm coastal gardens where the chill never accumulates.
The fruit is the one everybody recognises: deep red, elongated and conical with five distinct bumps around the base, thick skinned, sweet and mild rather than tart. It is an eating apple rather than a cooker, and the flesh turns floury if you leave it hanging too long.
- It needs a compatible pollinator nearby. Granny Smith, Gala or Golden Delicious flowering at the same time will do the job.
- Codling moth is the main pest. Trap or bag fruit early rather than reacting late.
- Prune in winter to an open framework so light reaches the fruiting wood.
