Tahitian Lime - Citrus latifolia
If there is only room for one citrus near the back door, a Tahitian lime earns the spot. Citrus latifolia gives seedless fruit picked green and juicy, on a tree that is close to thornless and noticeably more forgiving of cool weather than the small West Indian lime.
It wants full sun, free draining soil and deep regular water through summer. Erratic watering is the usual cause of fruit drop and split skins. Trees are grafted, so rub off any shoot that appears below the graft union before it takes over, and keep mulch and lawn back off the trunk.
Two pests to watch for:
- Citrus leafminer, which silvers and curls soft new growth through the warm months. On an established tree the damage is cosmetic.
- Citrus gall wasp in Queensland and New South Wales. Cut out swollen galls and bin them before the wasps emerge in spring.
It crops well in a large pot given a coarse free draining mix and regular feeding.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 16 sizes, from 170mm up to 500L, priced from $43.95 to $12109.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
