How quickly should I plant it?

For best results, unpack your plant promptly, water it well, and plant it as soon as practical.

Give your plant the best start after delivery.

  • Unpack your plant promptly and check the soil moisture on arrival.
  • Water deeply after planting to settle soil around the root zone.
  • Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, without leaving it waterlogged.
  • Choose a planting position suited to the plant's light requirements.
  • Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or stem.
  • For hedging or screening plants, trim lightly once established to encourage denser growth.

Care requirements vary by variety, climate, season, and planting location. Always match watering, sunlight, and soil conditions to the specific plant you are buying.

Washington Navel Orange - Citrus sinensis

Most of the orange trees in Australian backyards are this one, and with good reason. Washington navel is the standard winter navel here, seedless, easy to peel, sweet with enough acid behind it to stay interesting, and it ripens from mid winter when little else in the garden is producing. Fruit holds on the tree for weeks once ripe, so you can pick as you need rather than deal with a glut.

The tree is evergreen and moderate in growth, and it does far better in an open, sunny, well drained bed than out in lawn, where it competes badly for water and nitrogen. What goes wrong is usually predictable. Some fruit drop after flowering is normal, but a heavy drop points to dry roots through a hot spring, so water deeply and mulch out to the drip line without piling it against the trunk. Feed at least twice a year with a citrus fertiliser. In eastern Australia check stems each spring for citrus gall wasp swellings and cut them out before the wasps emerge. Flat $99 delivery to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA on orders over $399.

Choosing a size

This plant is available in 11 sizes, from 170mm up to 110L, priced from $76.95 to $1529.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
