Areca laosensis
Do not confuse this with the palm sold everywhere as an areca palm, which is really Dypsis lutescens, the golden cane. Areca laosensis is a true Areca, a slender clumping understorey palm from the monsoon forests of Laos and neighbouring Southeast Asia, and here it is a collector's palm rather than a landscape workhorse. Expect a modest multi stemmed clump with fine ringed canes and arching, deeply divided evergreen fronds that never coarsen.
Warmth, shelter and shade are the requirements. As a forest floor plant it scorches in direct midday sun, browns at the tips in dry wind, and checks badly in cold, which puts it in the frost free coastal and tropical bracket outdoors, or under cover further south. Keep the root zone moist and the air humid, use an open bark rich mix in pots, and feed lightly through the warm months. Supplied in 400mm, a size suited to a sheltered courtyard, atrium or bright indoor position.
