Hedge Bamboo - Bambusa multiplex
On a narrow suburban boundary where a running bamboo would be a disaster, hedge bamboo is the species people reach for. Bambusa multiplex is a clumper: new culms come up beside the existing ones instead of travelling on underground runners, so it will not surface in the neighbour's lawn or lift a path. It carries fine, small leaves right down to ground level, which is unusual in bamboo and the reason it screens so well.
Clumping does not mean static. The clump widens steadily year on year and an old one can hold a lot of ground, so set it back from the fence line rather than hard against it and allow more width than you think you need.
Keep it looking sharp by thinning the oldest, greyest culms out at ground level each year and feeding it as you would a lawn. Several named forms are grown, including striped and dwarf types, and they differ considerably in eventual size. Available in 5lt.
