River Birch Betula nigra Summer Cascade

Summer Cascade is a weeping selection of the American river birch, and the bark gives the species away: instead of chalky white it peels in ragged cinnamon, salmon and tan sheets that curl back off the trunk. The habit is genuinely pendulous, with no leader of its own, so the tree breaks and cascades from whatever height it has been staked to. Use it as a small feature tree over a pond edge, a courtyard specimen, or a mound spilling across the top of a wall.

Decide the height before you plant

The staking decision is yours and you only make it once. Train a stem up high and you get a small umbrella-shaped weeping tree with clearance underneath; leave it low and you get a mound of cascading growth suited to a bank or a water edge. Beyond that, this birch wants full sun to part shade and steady summer moisture, and unlike the white birches it tolerates wet, heavy ground and humid east coast summers, which is what makes it workable in Sydney and Brisbane gardens as well as cool climate ones. The diamond-shaped leaves are a fresh mid green through summer and turn soft yellow before they fall, a quieter autumn than a liquidambar gives you but one that arrives reliably in mild districts.

The one real failure mode is a hot dry root zone. Birch roots run shallow and wide, and against reflected heat off paving, in a west-facing gravel bed, or with a lawn irrigation system that only wets the top few centimetres, the leaves scorch at the margins and the fine outer wood dies back. Mulch widely, water deeply through summer, and give the roots cool ground rather than a narrow hot pocket.

Not a silver birch, and not a substitute

Anyone cross-shopping this against a weeping white birch should know the trade: you lose the chalk-white trunk and gain a tree that copes with damp soil and humidity. Against Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua, the difference is scale and consequence, since the liquidambar throws far more shade and stronger autumn colour but brings surface roots and spiky seed capsules that rule it out of a courtyard. Prune late, never in spring

Time pruning for late summer or early autumn, once growth has hardened. Birches bleed sap heavily from cuts made in late winter and early spring, which is unsightly and hard on a young tree, so avoid that window entirely. The work itself is light: thin crossing and rubbing stems inside the cascade, clear anything dragging on the ground, and keep the staked stem tied cleanly while it thickens. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser and renew the mulch layer before summer, since a cool root zone does more for this tree than any fertiliser will.
