Silver Birch

White trunks, fine fluttering foliage and butter-yellow autumn colour: birches bring a cool-climate elegance nothing else quite matches, especially planted in groups of three or five. This page lists every birch available from our partner farms.

Silver birch (Betula pendula) leads in all its forms: the classic species and its clean-trunked Alba and Moss White selections, multi-stem clumps for instant copse effect, the cut-leaf Dalecarlica, dark-leafed Black Prince, golden Wades Golden, upright Fastigiata for narrow spaces, and the weeping Youngii as a small lawn feature, stocked as standards at two heights. For the whitest bark in the family, Himalayan birch Jacquemontii is the specialist, with trunks that read almost painted. Japanese white birch Whitespire and the burgundy-flushed Royal Frost extend the collection. In warmer and more humid districts, river birch (Betula nigra) is the pick: it trades white bark for handsome cinnamon peeling and shrugs off heat and wet soil that stress silver birch, with Dura Heat and the weeping Summer Cascade as selected forms.

Growing notes: birches are shallow-rooted moisture lovers. Give them deep soil, reliable water and mulch, and keep the root zone out of hot western sun; in cool-climate gardens from the ranges south they are effortless, while warm-coast planting should favour river birch. They cast only light shade, so gardens grow happily beneath them. Prune, if needed, in summer only, as winter-pruned birches bleed sap heavily.
