Silver Birch - Betula pendula Youngii Weeping Birch Standards 1.8m
How tall does a weeping birch grow? For Youngii, the honest answer is: as tall as the graft. This is a strictly weeping form with no central leader, so the stem it is worked onto sets the final height, and these have been grafted at around 1.8 metres. From there the head builds outwards and the branches fall almost vertically, eventually curtaining to the ground unless you shorten them.
The result is a small mushroom-shaped tree carrying the fine leaves and white bark of silver birch, useful over a seat, beside a pond, or as a single specimen in a courtyard where a full birch would swamp the space.
Practical notes: leave the stake and ties until the union is strong, remove any shoot that appears below the graft, and thin congested inner branches in late winter so the crown does not turn into a solid dome. It is deciduous, and the tracery of bare weeping stems is half the reason to plant it. Available in 400mm and 500mm pots.
