Grey Birch - Betula populifolia Royal Frost
Not a green leafed birch. Royal Frost carries deep purple to burgundy foliage that holds its colour well into summer before turning orange and red in autumn, which is unusual in this genus, since most birches give you yellow and nothing else. The bark whitens as the tree matures rather than being white from the start, so young stock looks browner in the trunk than buyers tend to expect.
The habit is upright and fairly narrow with an open crown, which suits a driveway line or any spot where a broad spreading canopy is not wanted. The dark foliage needs full sun to hold its depth; in shade it goes a muddy green and the whole reason for choosing it disappears.
Culture is the same as the rest of the birches. Cool root run, mulch, deep soil and steady water through summer heat. The shallow roots resent soil being dug over around the base, and long spells of dry heat set the tree back.
