Silver Birch - Betula pendula Black Prince
New growth on Black Prince opens close to black, which turns the familiar silver birch picture into something much heavier: dark purple foliage hung on a white trunk. Through summer the colour softens towards bronze-green, more so in shade or in humid weather, so plant it in full sun for the darkest result and expect some seasonal drift rather than one constant tone.
It is less vigorous than a common silver birch, which is handy in a smaller garden, and the canopy stays light enough that grass and groundcovers still grow beneath it.
Dark leaves show stress badly. Hot dry wind burns the margins brown and the whole tree looks tired by late summer if the roots run dry, so mulch generously, water through heatwaves and keep it away from reflected heat off a west-facing wall. It is deciduous, and once the leaves go the bare white trunk carries the display through winter on its own. Offered here as a 45 litre advanced tree.
