Silver Birch - Betula pendula Alba Multi stem
Can you grow silver birch in a warm garden? Only within limits. Birch are cool climate trees. They do well in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, the tablelands and cooler coastal gardens, and they struggle where summers run long, hot and humid or where hard paving throws reflected heat back at the trunks. Given a cool root run, deep soil and reliable summer water they are one of the quickest ways to get height and light, dappled shade into a courtyard.
Multi stem means several trunks grown from the one base, so the white bark reads as a group rather than a single pole and the canopy stays open above head height. Autumn colour is clear yellow, then bare white stems all winter. The small triangular leaves move in the slightest breeze.
Two practical notes. The roots are shallow and greedy, so underplanting tight to the stems is a losing fight, and spring aphids can drop honeydew onto anything parked underneath.
