Illawarra Flame Tree - Brachychiton acerifolia
In a good season the Illawarra flame tree drops its leaves and covers the bare branches with scarlet bells you can pick out from a kilometre away across a valley. In an ordinary season it flowers on one limb, or not at all. That unreliability is the most important thing to understand before planting: seedling trees often take many years to flower, and the display is heaviest after a dry, stressful lead-up rather than a kind one.
It is a fine tree regardless, with a swollen trunk base, glossy leaves that vary from entire to deeply lobed on the same plant, and enough canopy to earn its place as a shade tree on the east coast.
Two warnings. The boat-shaped seed pods are lined with fine yellow hairs that irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves when raking them off lawns and play areas. And it is deciduous, shedding its canopy before it flowers, which catches out anyone expecting a permanently green street tree.
