English Box - Buxus sempervirens
English box and Japanese box get sold side by side and behave quite differently. Buxus sempervirens has darker, slightly larger leaves, a denser finish under the shears and noticeably slower growth, which is what you want in a low parterre or a clipped ball that has to hold its lines for years rather than months.
That slowness is also the catch. A knee-high border hedge grown on from small stock is a multi-season project, so buying larger grades is usually the sensible call where a garden is being handed over to a client.
Drainage matters more than fertility. Box sitting in heavy wet clay yellows off and dies back in patches, and the damage tends to show up after a wet winter rather than during it. In hot inland gardens it also scorches against a west-facing wall, so afternoon shade is a kindness. Clip in the cool of the day, avoid shearing in a heatwave, and keep the base of the hedge slightly wider than the top so the lower foliage keeps its light.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 11 sizes, from 66mm Square up to 200L, priced from $16.95 to $1769.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
