Port Jackson Pine - Callitris rhomboidea
Callitris rhomboidea holds a naturally dense, narrow, conical shape without any help, which is why it turns up in gardens well outside its natural range along the eastern and southern coasts. It is called Port Jackson pine in New South Wales and Oyster Bay pine in Tasmania. The foliage is fine, deep green, scale like and aromatic when brushed, and the small woody cones held along the branches have the angular form the species name refers to.
Landscape use is straightforward: a narrow evergreen vertical for a driveway line, a tight screen against a fence where a spreading tree will not fit, or a clipped formal accent. It takes shearing well and can be held to shape for years. Drainage matters more than anything else, and heavy wet soil combined with constant irrigation is what kills established plants. This is an advanced 35 litre plant from one farm, so it goes in with presence rather than as something to wait on.
