Camellia Beatrice Emily
Along a shaded fence line, or in a big pot against a wall that only catches morning sun, camellias do work that few other shrubs manage. Beatrice Emily is a sasanqua type, which means smaller glossy leaves, a finer denser habit and flowers in autumn rather than the spring show of the japonicas. The blooms are white with a lavender to purple flush toward the outer petals, and like other sasanquas they drop their petals cleanly instead of browning off on the bush. It clips well, so it works as a formal hedge, an espalier on a fence, or a screen in a narrow bed.
Soil is where people come unstuck. Camellias want acidic, humus-rich, free draining ground, and yellowing between the leaf veins usually points to alkalinity, often lime leaching from nearby concrete or render. Mulch well, plant slightly high rather than buried, and prune as soon as flowering finishes, since next autumn's buds are set over summer.
