Japanese Camellia - Camellia japonica Grace Albritton
At close range, the picotee is what sells this one. Grace Albritton is a miniature to small formal double japonica, pale pink with a distinct deeper pink edge to each neatly overlapping petal, and the flowers sit tidily against the foliage instead of blowing open.
Growth is slow and compact, so it stays in scale in a glazed pot, a narrow shaded bed or beside a front step where the flower detail can actually be seen. Used as a hedge it will take years to fill, which is worth knowing before you order a run of them. Small formal doubles need shelter from wind and from morning sun striking frosted buds, both of which brown the petal edges and spoil the pattern that makes the cultivar worth growing. Keep the soil acidic and free draining, mulch the shallow roots, water moderately and consistently, and feed after flowering. Supplied in 200mm and 300mm.
