Japanese Camellia - Camellia japonica Red Red Rose
Five farms grow this one and sizes run from 70mm tubes up to 150L, which makes it one of the more practical red japonicas to buy in matched numbers for a run of hedging or a repeated planting down a shaded side path. The flower is a formal double, deep rose red, petals laid over each other in tight even rows with no stamens showing, and it does look like the rose the name promises.
Formal doubles have one habit worth knowing. They hang onto spent blooms longer than singles do, and in a wet spring those hold on and brown off on the bush. A shake of the branches after rain deals with it.
Grown as a hedge it clips well, but clip only in the weeks straight after flowering. Camellias set their buds over summer and a late shear takes them off. Part shade, an acid soil that drains, and consistent water through the hot months are what it asks for.
